Yet there is definitely a difference in the quality of the different terry cloth you can buy. For instance, you have towelling made from cotton, organic cotton, recycled material, bamboo, as well as artificial fibres. The material used determines the quality and therefore the lifespan of the terry cloth product.

In flat terms, terry cloth is actually a collection of threads that are transformed into loops. This is done on a special machine with two chains. One chain makes the base of the terry cloth, while the other creates the loops. Apart from the material used, the difference in quality also lies in the space between the different loops. The closer the loops are together, the stronger and higher quality the terry cloth is.

We are all familiar with towels or flannels that fray because the loops of the terry cloth are pulled loose if you get caught on them with your nail or ring. This is not necessarily the case with all types of terry cloth. Firmer and more densely woven terry cloth ensures that it is ‘loop-tight’. This means no pulls can get in during washing or if the fabric gets caught on something. Little babies can still have sharp nails, so the loop-proof terry cloth is also resistant to this and therefore extra safe.
